Story:

A History of Old Nantucket: Iron rule with a Woman's Touch.

This is the English version of a chapter that I was asked to write for a book about whales. The main author was the courageous navigator Alain Bombard. Although the publishers told me they loved the manuscript when they received it, I was later informed that they were abandoning the project because of  Jacques Chirac's rise to power when his conservative party beat President Mitterand's coalition, which included Ecologists. I was so naive at the time that the news that the firm was jettisoning the non-partisan book (which it had commissioned without paying an advance) just because the political winds had changed came as a revelation. I will never forget how shocked I was by the company's craven self-censorship and alacrity to fall into line.
